Summary0000029: Black Screen with Overlay
DescriptionI have a problem that Blight suggested I run by you. I have a test clip (link below, bug tracker does not allow AVI files to be attached) that when played with Overlay enabled on my system (NVIDIA GTX 660Ti, 314.07 drivers, Win 7 64bit), shows no video. The video plays in Zoom Player, but there is no actual picture - that is, the video window is black. If I disable Overlay mode, the video shows fine.

On Blight's system (NVIDIA GT 520, not sure what drivers he has), Overlay shows the picture fine. We both have the exact same filter chain, so literally the only difference is the video hardware and probably the driver version. Blight said to tell you that the driver may be lying about supporting that colorspace and that you might be able to convert it.

This is with madVR v0.86.1 - Zoom Player 8.6 Beta 30.

I don't see what the driver would have to do with it. madVR always feeds RGB to Direct3D, in all modes, including Overlay. It's hard for me to understand why Overlay would not work with one specific video file.

On my PC AVI Decompressor is not involved. LAV Splitter -> LAV Video Decoder -> madVR is the chain here. Could you please check if the filter chain works for you in Overlay mode? When you turn off Overlay, do you get the same filter chain?

This is really confusing to me, I don't understand it.

Yes, the filter chain is the same, regardless of whether Overlay is enabled or not. The only difference being that with Overlay enabled, the video window is black, and without Overlay enabled, the video window is ok.

I'm not sure how to get rid of AVI Decompressor and the Colour Space Convertor - Zoom seems to use them regardless of what splitter I choose for AVI (choices in Zoom's Smart Play profiles are LAV or File Source (Async).

Ok, by adding a video decoding profile for CRAM (apparently the codec type in the video) to Smart Play (set to use LAV), I got Zoom to remove the AVI Decompressor and Colour Space Convertor. No change though - Overlay enabled = black screen, Overlay disabled = no issue.

The only difference is that with the previous filters (AVI Decompressor and Colour Space Convertor), if you toggle Overlay mode in madVR's options while the video is playing, you can see the effect immediately. That is, toggle Overlay on, video turns black. Toggle it off, it returns to normal. With LAV loaded, you have to restart Zoom Player to see the changes. That is, toggle Overlay on, the video will play fine until you restart Zoom, whereupon the video window will be black.

Well, I'm not sure what to say. Maybe your GPU drivers are screwed up somehow. I don't think there's much I can do about this, unfortunately... :-( So I'll have to close this bug.
