Summary0000324: The upscaling is completely broken.
DescriptionYesterday, I decided to update the Kawaii Codec Pack as per usual and, of course, add my configuration as usual. Once I started watching another episode of Gintama, though, I noticed that quality looked off. I decided to load an episode I had a screenshot of and compare the new version of madVR (0.88.16)'s image to 0.88.11's. Mind you, the results are huge. And it's all using the same config.

Oh and on the left is a screenshot of 0.88.11, on the right - 0.88.16
Steps To ReproduceEnter my config.

In the Kawaii Codec Pack settings the settings are set to "Highest".

Afterwards, I enter my own config:

processing -> artifact removal -> enable "reduce banding artifacts" with everything on "high"

scaling algorithms:

chroma -> NNEDI3 32 neurons
downscaling -> catmull-rom
image doubling -> double chroma & luma, quad luma & chroma, octuple luma/chrome res. Always if upscaling is needed. NNEDI3 32 neurons all.
image upscaling -> Jinc
upscaling refinement -> FineSharp mode 1 str. 2 thinning 0.019 repair 0.25 no linear light
lumasharpen str. 1.00 clamp 0.035 radius 1.0 (w/o exp. limiter)
superres 3 passes, error upscaling high, str. 0.35, sharpness 0.25, softness 0.25, AA 0.25, antiringing 0.00

exclusive mode enabled and without 3 sec delay.
Additional InformationFor copyright reasons, I have only included my own comparison of the Gintama episode - I'm afraid sharing the episode itself might be against the rules.

Do you see any differences in the OSD (Ctrl+J)?

Please try turning SuperRes off in both 0.88.11 and 0.88.16. Do you then get the same image quality? SuperRes has changed quite a lot recently.

Hm, I actually have noticed I have used the wrong frame there.

It seems that there's actually nothing wrong now, hah. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Still though, how exactly has SuperRes changed?

The whole SuperRes algo has changed. I'd suggest to set strength to 1.0 now with v0.88.18. It might still change in the future, it's a work-in-progress right now.

So if nothing is wrong, I can close this bug report?

Um, which SuperRes config would be relative to the one I used and which algo do I use then?

And yes.

There's nothing relative to it, it's totally changed.

Hm, what does each algo do then? (Is there a place where I can read up more on the new SuperRes, too?)

And uh... it seems that it makes the image blurrier for some reason.

The right place for discussing things like this is the doom9 madVR thread:
