Summary0000038: Jittery playback of telecined files (29.97 fps, 3:2 cadence) using FRC over 60 Hz display with IVTC forced on
DescriptionSmooth Motion works well for 23/24p film content on my 60 Hz display, but while playing a telecined 29.97 fps content with 3:2 cadence apparently it does not work properly. I think madVR applies FRC using 29.97 fps even when IVTC is forced on for such files. Instead, madVR should decimate the video to 23/24p first and then apply FRC 24p to 60 Hz.
Additional InformationI haven't checked playback of other kinds of telecined files with different cadences, as I don't have any such content.

It seems to work for me. It might depend on the video file. Could you upload a small sample where the problem is obvious?

You can try forcing film mode deinterlacing in madVR and using 60Hz display mode with smoothmotion ON.

I don't know where you got those files from, but I consider them "broken". The timestamps are bad, and actually they're not interlaced at all. It seems someone converted some HD DVD content to TS format without really knowing what he was doing... ;-) You can fix the file like this:

(1) eac3to broken.ts 1: repaired.h264 2: audio.ac3
(2) manually delete the gaps file
(3) eac3to repaired.h264 trailer.mkv
(4) use mkvtoolnix to mux in the audio track

After this the video will play perfectly with smooth motion turned on.

I don't have any real telecined material at the moment. However, I have experienced the same problem as described above with some telecined files downloaded from Youtube. Please see once such sample with varying cadence:

I am not sure if the timestamps problem is exhibited in these files as well. I have not used eac3to before. When I have some spare time, I will try the steps you mentioned to see if the Transformers videos play smoothly after the conversion.

The first one has a 4:2:2:2:2 cadence, which is somewhat weird. It converts the 30fps to 25fps. But the cadence is not reliable, so madVR can't just optimize everything for 25fps.

The clip from the DVE HD DVD is somewhat similar to the Transformers video. The splitter (tried LAV Splitter) didn't do a really good job with the timestamps, which made playback non-smooth. By remuxing the video to MKV with eac3to, playback becomes smooth, except for the first 2-3 seconds of the video.

Generally, the current implementation of Smooth Motion FRC depends on that the video timestamps are alright. If the timestamps are screwed up, Smooth Motion FRC will not be smooth, anymore. Maybe I can improve that in a future version, but probably not anytime soon. For now it is required that the video files are muxed with "good" timestamps.

I'll close this bug for now, since there isn't really anything wrong with Smooth Motion FRC. The problem is with the timestamps in your video files.
