Summary0000553: madVR causes system to hang
DescriptionWhen playing certain video files, madVR will cause the entire system to freeze/hang causing me to forcefully reboot the computer to get anything working again. Not even CTRL+ALT+DEL works.

This often happens a few minutes in while watching the video, or doing anything like; changing subtitles, jumping forward/backward, or pausing and resuming playback. The entire screen will then go completely black causing me to have to manually reboot the computer. Issue occurs while in windowed or fullscreen.
Steps To Reproduce1.) Play video windowed or fullscreen
2.) Let video play for a few minutes, or do any of the following:
    a.) Change subtitles
    b.) Jump forward/backward
    c.) Pause and resume playback
3.) Entire screen will go black
4.) At this point the entire system freezes/hangs
Additional InformationI haven't tested this on any other video format other than MKV. I'm not entirely sure if it's on every single MKV video, but the three I tried watching all had them same issue.

Hmmmm... The screenshot is from a crash, but the pastebin text file is from a freeze. So that seems like 2 different things?

You say the whole screen goes black and you have to reboot. So if that's the case, where did you get the crash and freeze reports from?

I'm not doubting your report, just trying to understand what's happening and how the crash and freeze reports fit into the black screen...

Sorry, I should of clarified more. When in fullscreen the entire screen goes black. When in windowed mode only the screen of the player itself goes black. Sometimes it will crash to the error you see on the screen, other times the system freezes but usually the later. The report is from one of the freezes.

When you get the crash again, can you press "show bug report", then press Ctrl+C to copy the bug report to the clipboard, then pastbin it?

The crash occurs while doing error diffusion. I'm not sure about the exact reason for the crash. It might be a GPU driver bug, but I'm not sure.

Probably switching to ordered or random dithering will solve the problem?

So...I tried the following, but no luck:
-Switching from Ordered to Random dithering in LAV Video.
-Trying each of the dithering options in madVR, with and without "use colored noise" and "change dither for every frame" enabled or disabled.
-Tying to sets of older GPU drivers; 388.31 and 384.94

Not sure what else to do at this point. :/

Did you ever have error diffusion turned on at all?

The crash still occurs even when not using error diffusion? If so, can you pastebin another crash report, with error diffusion turned off?

Yes, I usually have Error Diffusion 2 turned on. Even with it set to None, turned off, it still crashes. Unfortunately, I spent a good 30 minutes trying to get the error message to re-appear but the whole screen turns black or a random solid color preventing me to be able to do anything else.

That's bad. Unfortunately the problem doesn't occur on my PC, and the other madVR users don't seem to have the same problem, either. That makes it extremely hard for me to do anything. I'd really need to be able to reproduce the issue on my PC, or alternatively at least get a crash report. Without that I'm pretty much lost...

I'll close this for now, because I can't fix it without further information. If you manage to get a crash report, please feel free to reopen.
