Summary0000572: Random crash during playback
DescriptionWhile playing a video MadVR sometimes crashes. This video will freeze but audio will continue. If I go back to the desktop a crash notification from MadVR will be shown.

I use the following software:
- Kodi DSPlayer
- Lav filter 0.72.0 with D3D11 hardware decoding
- Sanear audio renderer

It happend randomly and with all types of videos. I use the latest NVidea drivers.

I had to fill in DXVA2 in the boxes below because it doesn't have D3D11 yet. I've tried this with DXVA2 Copy Back and it also happens with that decoder

Looks like a crash somewhere inside of D3D9. You could try installing different GPU drivers. Or alternatively, try reinstalling D3D9, or try switching madVR's option "use D3D11 for presentation" on.

I think that option is already on since I often watch HDR and 4K videos. Wil check in the morning to make sure. If it doesn’t work I’ll revert my GPU drivers.

How can I reinstall D3D9? I still think it’s a bit it’s using that though. Today it crashed on a x265 HVEC 10bit 1080p video. Shouldn’t it already be using D3D11 for that?

madVR consists of many parts. Some are always D3D9, some are always D3D11, and some are switched, depending on the options.

I think you can download a D3D9 installer somewhere and run it. Don't have a link at hand right now.

Yes, as a developer I would love to read through the source code at one point. I think it's amazing what madVR does with the picture quality compared to normal TV upscalers. Even 480p content is watchable on my 4K screen. Do you publish the source anywhere?

*** End praise section ;) ***

I've decided to revert back to a previous NVidia driver (398.11). The problems are new and I haven't had any issues before. I'll let you know if it still happens with this GPU driver version. It could also be due to a Windows upgrade. It recently updated to 1803. Is there a Windows version you recommend for 4K HDR compatibility? Or should it just work on all versions?

I recommend Windows 8.1. Every Windows 10 update brings new problems. If you're on the latest Windows 10 build, make sure you disable Focus Assistant. And that means unchecking everything, including all sub-options (otherwise it's still somewhat active).

madVR is closed source, unfortunately. Thanks for the praise, though!

I'll try a fresh install of Windows 8.1 next week. Don't really need Win10 because it's a dedicated Media machine. I thought that it was required for HDR to work.
Maybe I can even switch back to 32bit and use trusty Reclock again (doesn't work on Win10 correctly).

Is here a way to export settings from madVR? Or do I have to make screenshots of all my settings and profiles?

Focus assist was already off.

There's a settings.bin in your madVR folder - but only if madVR has write access to it. Otherwise, there's a "Settings" value in the registry somewhere under HKCU/Software or HKLM/Software. Don't remember the exact path right now.

Windows 8.1 works fine for HDR, as long as you're using an Nvidia or AMD GPU.

Ok, I’ve reinstalled my mediacenter to Windows 8.1 and everything is working. Kodi DSPlayer + LAV + madVR + ReClock, all in 32bit.

The problem I still have though is video lag (audio is early). Completely irrelevant to this issue, but I would like to know what you think about this, because the internet has more than a million opinions about this issue.

Setup:
MediaCenter -> HDMI -> Denon Receiver -> HDMI -> LG Oled TV

When I use the correct display mode (2160p23), I have video lag (noticable). But when I remove the display mode and force madVR to put the display in 59hz, I have way less lag.
Could it be that my TV needs more time to process a 23p video? If so, then that problem cannot be fixed with software. I also can’t get HDMI auto lip-sync to work (seems like an old feature as well).

Would like to hear your opinion about this issue, and if my conclusion is correct.
I think I have tried everything at this point. Custom modes, two HDMI cabkes (one to the TV, and one to the receiver), Sanear vs Reclock, MPC vs Kodi, adding a delay to my receiver. Basically eveything, but with no good solution.

Thnx!

If you have different audio sync depending on display mode, then maybe your TV is in different modes? E.g. maybe for 23p you have frame interpolation on? Or maybe game mode? Or anything like that, which might influence latency. I don't really know. This is not a problem many users report. I don't think it's anything related to madVR.

I'll close this one because the original issue seems to be "fixed" by switching to Windows 8.1. If you want to reopen for some reason, feel free to do so.
