Summary0000579: missing settings
Descriptionin latest madVR v0.92.16 build HDR to SDR conversion works only when you select Let madVR decide in HDR options
Steps To ReproducemadVR v0.92.16 https://i.imgur.com/cMUu3wT.png [^]
madVR v0.92.14 https://i.imgur.com/5rCD1wU.png [^]

when you select convert HDR to SDR using pixel shader math it has no effect on colors and some settings are missing, in v0.92.14 everything is working as it should with good colors
Additional Informationi use displayport cable and nvidia full-RGB setting in nvidia control panel, i also use this calibration settings for extra crisp color reproduction
https://i.imgur.com/Zw9abar.png [^] so there's something wrong in new build

It works fine here. FWIW, I did remove some options because they're no longer needed. Your v0.92.16 settings screenhot looks exactly as it should.

Can you attach a screenshot of a HDR movie playing, one with v0.92.14 and one with v0.92.16, using "HDR -> SDR pixel shader math" activated? You do use the same "target peak nits" settings in both versions, right?

yes i used exact same settings:
madvr 0.92.14 https://i.imgur.com/i76qutc.png [^]
madvr 0.92.16 https://i.imgur.com/v9NYYFU.png [^]
both with same callibration settings https://i.imgur.com/Zw9abar.png [^]
madvr 0.92.16 without any callibration using SDR pixel shader math https://i.imgur.com/Y14SROz.png [^]

with new build colors are more or less fine using this settings:

https://i.imgur.com/twqHsYO.png [^]

but with old callibration settings colors are dull

https://i.imgur.com/6sbfc8E.png [^]

madvr 0.92.14 and older builds all worked same before

Wow, that looks really extremely dark!

Two ideas:

1) Could you try resetting madVR to default values, just as a test? You can save your "settings.bin" file (if there is one in the madVR folder), so you can go back to the original settings. Going back to the original settings works like this: Restore default settings once more. Then simply copy in the old settings.bin file.

2) If the above doesn't help, please try different decoder variants, e.g. DXVA Native vs DXVA Copyback vs Software vs D3D11. Do they all show the same problem?

I suppose this happens with *all* HDR videos, correct?

yes all HDR videos look more or less same, i use 200 nits, on 100 nits it's brighter but with loss of some colors https://i.imgur.com/q4f5SKG.png [^] my monitor gamma is 2.2
i already reset madvr to default values, but it doesn't help, maybe it's time to buy at least 2K monitor with 350 cd/m² https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/dell-u2518d/ [^] with p2314h colors are too dark at 200 nits (using default brighness and contrast 75) i think 0.92.14 build with old calibration has better richer colors and at least you can see something in really dark scenes, as for newer build it is even darker without using calibration, with different callibration setting you can achieve better results https://i.imgur.com/twqHsYO.png [^] so new build uses some other method and doesn't like old callibration settings https://i.imgur.com/v9NYYFU.png [^] so i better stay on 0.92.14 build
i have following Filters currently loaded:
  - Default DirectSound Device
  - madVR
  - Audio Switcher
  - LAV Video Decoder (internal)
  - LAV Audio Decoder (internal)
  - LAV Splitter Source (internal)
i7-4770 cpu does most job, later maybe i install GTX1080Ti from mining rig and it can do GPU acceleration on 4K HDR videos, SDR videos are working fine, only HDR ones are too dark

Can you maybe upload a little video sample, so I can double check your screenshots on my PC? Maybe when we compare your screenshots with mine, we can find out what's going on.

On my PC v0.92.16 does not seem to draw images any darker than v0.92.14.

http://sendfile.su/1444067 [^] video
https://i.imgur.com/VD84NdV.png [^] screen is from the beggining of that video sample

but now i used 0.92.14 version and these settings
https://i.imgur.com/Zw9abar.png [^]
https://i.imgur.com/5rCD1wU.png [^]
https://i.imgur.com/Ytr3f46.png [^]
color and gamma settings i left unchanged i use FULL-RGB in nvidia control panel, other color settings is at default level, with 0.92.16 i get very different colors using same callibration settings, without calibration it's too dark, maybe my display doesn't like 200 nits, so i'm staying on 0.92.14 build, here's difference between pure power curve and other calibration option:
https://i.imgur.com/nJZXQpg.png [^]
https://i.imgur.com/pW0BCI2.png [^]

with bt.619 curve i have better richer colors, if i raise gamma level or decrease nits to 100 i lose some colors, it's better to stay darker but richer colors

I've attached 2 screenshots from my PC, using a target peak nits of 280 nits, with v0.92.14 and v0.92.16. I've set "this display is already calibrated to BT.709 gamut, with a pure power curve of 2.20.

As you can see, the 2 images are almost identical.

Can you verify?

yes your screens are identical, here's my 0.92.14 version
https://i.imgur.com/AvMOsVa.png [^] 200 nits same calibration settings as you had
https://i.imgur.com/eHAHgKO.png [^] on second screen i used different setting https://i.imgur.com/Zw9abar.png [^]

here's 0.92.16 screens with same settings:
https://i.imgur.com/SX01Qig.png [^]
https://i.imgur.com/8AVflQJ.png [^]

as you can clearly see second screen is quite different from 0.92.14 version screen, old version has brighter and crisper color, new one greyish and dull when using same settings, but with 2.2 gamma it's brighter than without any callibration and then screens are almost same, i like older version with these settings https://i.imgur.com/Zw9abar.png [^] it has more vibrant and crisper colors, i think my monitor just lacks brightness level, 2K newer monitors with at least 350 nits should do better in HDR videos using madvr plugin

with gamma 2.2 and pure power curve callibration, 200 nits is too much, maximum i can set 150 nits with losing some color tones, so i prefer different setting, maybe new version uses different callibration method when using second option, here's old version using only 100 nits
https://i.imgur.com/tH65uGj.png [^] using same callibration settings, here's 150 nits
https://i.imgur.com/6X3Cuqh.png [^] maybe in some movies with darker scenes it's better to use 150 nits to increase brightness level, at 200 nits color reproduction is better, but some darker scenes look too dark

Is the problem fixed in this build?

yes now it's almost perfect, i think it's even better than 0.92.12, there's no more greish dull colors, i checked couple of videos, also changed dithering settings https://i.imgur.com/mrD2Mfj.png [^]
i will continue to use this setting, i think new version has better color reproduction using those settings:
https://i.imgur.com/mrD2Mfj.png [^]
https://i.imgur.com/BGuMNwS.png [^]
when you start to decrease nits level or even further increase gamma (for example at 2.6) colors are less natural, especially faces, those settings will look more or less good in darker scenes, when there's too much sun it's better to use my settings, i think this could change if i move to better 2K monitor model with factory callibration and at least 350 cd/m² (then i put around 288-300 nits) + real 8bit ah-ips without dithering, but even on my simple 6bit+dithering 2013 ah-ips model mad-vr plugin makes 4K HDR videos watchable using MPC-HC, i'm using it since last september and you have made some progress in color reproduction, as well as performance, so now i stay on 0.92.16 build with two new files you sent me, here's the pics from eddie the eagle:
https://i.imgur.com/Iopb5oI.png [^] (using bt709/601 curve 2.4 gamma)
https://i.imgur.com/BEeTPdu.png [^] (using pure power curve 2.2 gamma)
you can see that 2.4 has more vibrant and crisper colors, in motion it's looking even better especially on brighter scenes

as for performance, my cpu uses around 50-60% per core, but there's no lags and freezes, as for 1080Ti it works flawless using GPU acceleration with mpc+hc+mad-vr, my old 780 gpu only has 2160P gpu acceleration with 8bit videos, with 4K HDR it uses some software + hybrid method, but it's still watchable if you have powerful cpu with at least 8 Threads, so i watch lot's of 4K videos nowdays, 4K HDR monitors are still too expencive, especially with good ips models with Gsync 144 herz support, which need at least 2080Ti 1000$ GPU to have 60fps+ on latest games, but you need minimum 3500$ to spent + good system as well, so madvr plugin helps a lot if you like to watch movies on monitor
