Summary | 0000736: 10 bit mode fails entirely after another 3d application is used.
Description | madVR loses the ability to send 10 bit on win 11 newest build when another 3d application was used.
Steps To Reproduce | play something in 10 bit mode open a 3D application i used a game. madVR can enter 10 bit mode anymore closing the game restarting the player nothing of this matters
Additional Information | killing the explorer reset the situation and madVR can enter 10 bit mode again even when another 3d application is used at the same time. one tab and it loses the ability again. other report mpcVR can still enter 10 bit mode in this case i can not test this i don'T have a 1in 11 system with a screen that allows sending 10 bit to it and mpcVR will now allow to send 10 bit to the driver in that case. here is some information broken state: https://i.postimg.cc/tyH6FyKr/broken-state.png the independent flip is usually the indicator that madVR will try to use 10 bit. here same case but i killed the windows explorer taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe & start explorer : https://i.postimg.cc/Lmjg0WF9/fixed.png it can now use 10 bit again. i didn't even close the game which is running on the same display. IMPORTANT this issue will happen even if the other 3d application is closed. there a quite a number of report of this that's why i investigated even through this system is using a 6 bit TN panel and can't do 10 bit or HDR. this is pretty much only reported by nvidia user so this is not an AMD issue.

My best guess would be that there's an invisible window which covers the madVR rendering window, preventing it from entering exclusive mode. This is part of madVR's "automatic fullscreen exclusive mode" logic, which tries to automatically switch into and out of exclusive mode whenever needed. For example, if you right click on the video in MPC-HC to choose the subtitle or audio track, a menu will open up, which may be invisible in exclusive mode, so madVR auto switches into fullscreen mode in that situation. Granted, this used to be a bigger problem in older OSs. In Windows 10/11, it's possible that the MPC-HC subtitle/audio menu would still show even if madVR is in exclusive mode, so maybe I should disable the whole auto switching logic? I'm not sure, would have to be investigated. |

this is also reported to happen in old FSE mode the one from win 7 not the fake one we have to day by disabling fullscreen optimization. do you have a build for me with the auto logic disabled? it's trivial to test for me now that i have the setup. i also remember that madVR was in the past(maybe even today) blocking 10 bit output on nvidia when it knows nvidia is sending only 8 bit to the display. in the past this would result in massive banding so losing that feature would be bad. this is also the reason i took me so long to even report this issue i forgot i had an AMD card in my system even allowing me to test in the first place. presentmon should be able to catch everything in front of it and yes if a sub menu is open presentmon will immediately report a different presentation mode and temporary changes to 8 bit because it has to. but the problem is i can just run a game and i will never be able to use 10 bit at all even through nothing was ever in front of madVR or any context menu is used. people are that desperate that they ask for script to kill the windows explorer and start the media player after that. i don't need to tell you that this is not the bestest of all moves ever... i cannot test this without insane effort but AMD needs 10 bit to make HDR work at all so that should be generally broken now without OS HDR |

I'm extremely busy right now with important Envy firmware changes, so I can't create a new madVR HTPC build right now, but I'll put this on my to do list and get back to you. |
